Featuring 91 lots of leading masters from the modern period alongside cutting-edge contemporary art across Africa’s most celebrated artists, there were quite a number of other impressive sales, according to the auction results released by Arthouse. Other sales included Ablade Glover’s Blue Profile, an oil on canvas dates 2016, sold for N7,285,000 ($20,236); oil on canvas by Peju Alatise, titled Respte, sold for N6,462,500 ($17,951); and Lemi Ghariokwu’s Fela-Rhapsody set a new auction record with N6,110,000 ($16,972).
The auction also included charity lots in support of the Arthouse Foundation, the non- profit artist residency programme, raising NGN 1,280,000 ($3,556). The proceeds of these artworks will go directly toward supporting the activities of the Arthouse Foundation, including exhibitions, residencies and workshops.
Founded in 2007, Arthouse Contemporary is an international auction house that specialises in modern and contemporary art from West Africa. With auctions held twice a year in Lagos, Arthouse Contemporary aims to create awareness of the scope of contemporary art in the region, encourage international recognition towards its talented artists, and strengthen the economy of its art market.
The Arthouse Contemporary auction was supported by Kia Showroom, Le Connaisseur, 7UP, Chocolat Royal and The Guardian Nigeria newspaper.
