Uwa Usen (May 12, 1963-June 30, 2020)

Former President, Society of. Nigerian Artists (SNA), Uwa Usen died in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, in the evening of Tuesday, June 30 2020. Usen's death was confirmed Wednesday evening by his colleague at University of Uyo,  Prof Best Ochigbo shortly after SNA, Lagos posted the news on its Facebook page.


Ochigbo who described the death of Usen as sudden and shocking said, the former SNA president took ill briefly, "but surprisingly, the family broke the sad news yesterday (Tuesday) evening." May his soul rest in peace. Amen.

Usen, in November 2008, emerged as SNA president during the association's convention held
from November 24-26, at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Usen took over the leadership of SNA, for three years, from former Deputy Rector, Yaba College of Technology, Mr. Kolade Oshinowo.

Born into the popular Chief J.U Usen family, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin LGA, the artist and scholar attended St
Gregory’s College, Obalende, Ikoyi, Lagos for his secondary school education. He proceeded to the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, where he graduated in Fine Arts, specialising in Sculptures. He returned to ABU for his Master’s degree in Fine Arts and Sculpture in 1988. Usen got his Ph.D at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

    Rest in peace my president. We served in the same SNA exco. He was also with us from the formative years of the Sculptor's Association of Nigeria. Our last assignment together was the packaging of the virtual exhibition of ScAN in collaboration with Rotary. Our committee on a ScAN position paper on the merger of NGA and NCAC is still ongoing. We will miss your possitive mien.

    We have indeed lost a great friend and colleague in Fine Arts & Design. Uwa was the first PhD student in sculpture in the Department of Fine Arts and Design, Uniport.He did not stop at that, in his usual restlessness in art, he encourages artists, he made suggestions all to move art and artists forward.     Words simply fail me, my dear cousin..
    To think that you and l spoke at length just two weeks prior during which l promised to set in motion arrangements for you to visit me in the UK..
    You had also encouraged me to partake in a pre arranged zoom conference on the effects of tourism in Nigeria's economy...
    l was really looking forward to your next phone call only to receive the heartbreaking news from big brother, Nkanta, whom you were so inextricably close to.
    l still cannot believe that you are gone, Uwa..
    l still cannot accept...
