Enwonwu, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Uche Okeke, El Anatsui, Yinka Shonibare , Abiodun
Olaku are among other African artists whose works have been slated to make the
maiden edition of Sotheby’s auction of Modern and Contemporary African Art,
which will take place in London on 16 May 2017.
According to Sotheby’s website the auction will include some of the
best-known contemporary artists from across the continent. Among the artists
are, William Kentridge,
Romuald Hazoumè, Chéri Samba, Meschac Gaba, Abdoulaye Konaté,
Ouattara Watts, Kader Attia and Pascale Marthine Tayou, as well as other modern
masters Skunder Boghossian, J.H. Pierneef and Irma Stern.
From the contemporary generation are Peju
Alatise, Dawit Abebe, Nnenna Okere, Abdoulaye Kanoute, among others.
With 115 lots, mostly from artists of West
African and South African origins, some of the prices are as low as
£5
and as high as £600,000.
But a total sale estimate of about £2.8m is
said to be the target of Sotheby’s first
auction of Modern and contemporary African art. MORE HERE.
