A-ARTs: With continuity, contemporary expression, 'Lineage of the Masters II' honours Grillo

THE 5th Year Posthumous and 92nd Birthday Celebration Of Professor Yusuf Adebayo Cameron Grillo features the 2nd edition of Lineage of the Masters exhibition.

The 'Lineage of the Masters II: Continuity, and Contemporary Expression' show holds from a tentative date of October 24– December 21, 2026 at Yusuf Grillo Museum, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria. The exhibition is ultimately a celebration of artistic inheritance—an affirmation that great ideas do not end with the lives of those who conceive them, stated a curatorial note released during the preview. The curatorial note explained that great ideas continue to evolve through the hands, minds, and imaginations of those who encounter them.

"In honouring Yusuf Grillo, we celebrate a legacy that remains vibrant, relevant, and profoundly influential within contemporary art today," the team of curators stated during the preview. "This note is drawn up by the team of curators: Dr. Kunle Adeyemi, Mr. Kehinde Sanwo and Mrs. Morayo Grillo Anthonio.

Excerpts from the curatorial note: "The history of art is shaped not only by individual achievements but also by the legacies that artists leave behind. Such legacies become part of an ongoing cultural conversation, influencing future generations and inspiring new interpretations of identity, memory, creativity, and social consciousness.

"Yusuf Grillo's Legacy: Continuity and Contemporary Expression" is conceived as an international commemorative exhibition marking the fifth anniversary of the transition of Professor Yusuf Adebayo Grillo and celebrating his 92nd posthumous birthday. The exhibition explores the enduring impact of his artistic, educational, and cultural contributions within contemporary visual art practice.

"The project is founded on the understanding that artistic influence extends beyond direct imitation. Legacy manifests through ideas, values, teaching methodologies, aesthetic principles, cultural commitments, and intellectual traditions that continue to inspire artists across generations and geographical boundaries."

Professor Grillo is known as one of Africa's most distinguished modern artists, educators, and cultural visionaries.

"Yusuf Grillo occupies a unique position in the history of Nigerian and African art. Emerging during a pivotal period in Nigeria's cultural development, he became one of the defining figures of modern Nigerian artistic practice. Through his distinctive visual language, characterized by elegant compositions, architectural sensibilities, stylized figuration, and his celebrated use of luminous indigo-blue tonalities, Grillo established an artistic identity that was simultaneously modern, Trad-African, and deeply rooted in cultural consciousness.

"Yet Grillo's significance extends far beyond aesthetics. As an educator, administrator, mentor, and former Head of Department, Director of the School of Art, Design and Printing at the Yaba College of Technology, he influenced generations of artists who continue to shape contemporary artistic discourse within Nigeria and across the global African diaspora. His commitment to excellence, intellectual rigor, cultural authenticity, and artistic innovation helped define the trajectory of contemporary Nigerian art for decades.

"This commemorative exhibition seeks to explore not only Grillo's artistic achievements but also the living legacy of his ideas. It asks a fundamental question: How does the influence of a great artist continue to resonate long after his physical departure?

"The participating contemporary artists have been selected because their practices reflect varying degrees of engagement with Grillo's legacy; while his professional colleague shared his philosophy and mindset. Some of today's contemporary artists were directly taught, mentored, or inspired by him. Others have encountered his influence through institutional histories, artistic traditions, cultural narratives, or the broader evolution of contemporary African art. Together, their works reveal how artistic legacies transcend generations, geographies, mediums, and ideologies.

"Rather than presenting homage alone, this exhibition encourages dialogue between the past and present. It invites artists to respond critically, creatively, and imaginatively to the ideas, values, and visual philosophies associated with Yusuf Grillo through painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography, mixed media, installation, digital art, and interdisciplinary practices. The exhibition demonstrates how legacy functions as a living process of transmission, reinterpretation, and renewal.

"The exhibition therefore becomes a site of memory, reflection, and creative continuity. It celebrates the remarkable contributions of Yusuf Grillo while simultaneously acknowledging the new artistic directions that emerged from his influence.

"As visitors engage with the works presented, they are invited to consider not only what Yusuf Grillo achieved during his lifetime, but also how his vision continues to inspire artistic expression and shape future generations of artists."

The exhibition is organized around three interconnected thematic pillars:

1. CONTINUITY

Continuity examines the transmission of artistic knowledge, cultural values, and creative philosophies across generations.

Yusuf Grillo belonged to a pioneering generation of Nigerian artists who sought to establish a modern visual language capable of expressing African realities within contemporary contexts. Their contributions created foundations upon which subsequent generations continue to build.

Works within this thematic category explore: Cultural inheritance and memory. Artistic mentorship and transmission. Historical consciousness. Preservation of artistic traditions. Intergenerational dialogue. The continuity of African visual narratives.

2. INSPIRATION

Inspiration focuses on the ways artists absorb, reinterpret, and transform influences encountered throughout their creative journeys.

Rather than viewing influence as replication, the exhibition recognizes inspiration as a dynamic process through which artists engage with existing ideas while developing unique voices of their own.

Artists are encouraged to reflect upon: Personal encounters with Grillo's work as well as his contemporaries

The influence of artistic mentors. Sources of creativity and imagination. Educational experiences. Transformative moments in artistic development. The role of exemplary figures in shaping artistic identity.

3. CONTEMPORARY EXPRESSION

Contemporary Expression addresses the relevance of Grillo's and his contemporaries' legacies within today's rapidly evolving artistic landscape.

Contemporary artists navigate complex realities shaped by globalization, technological innovation, migration, environmental concerns, social transformation, and shifting cultural identities. This exhibition encourages artists to engage with these contemporary realities while drawing inspiration from enduring artistic principles embodied by Yusuf Grillo's practice.
