Francis Bacon’s large-format Triptych Inspired by the Oresteia of Aeschylus (1981) goes to Sotheby’s Contemporary, Impressionist and Modern Art auctions.
The work is expected to sell for more than $60 million at the Contemporary Art Evening Auction via online viewing and sales, in New York. Previously scheduled for May, it will be held on June 29, as a fallout of restrictions over COVID-19 pandemic.
The masterpiece depicts the trilogy of Greek tragedies from the 5th century B.C. The work has been provenanced to be from the collection of Norwegian tycoon and shipping conglomerate heir, Hans Rasmus Astrup.
