Amodu makes debut solo art auction on Inspire platform

A solo art auction of artist Rasheed Amodu, featuring old and new works opened online last Friday and ending May 17, 2020.

Amodu, whose career as a studio artist took off in 1985 is putting up for sale 37 pieces of paintings in diverse textures, including mixed media. In the auction simply titled Rasheed Amodu Online Art Auction 2020, the artist described his works as being generated "from society, literature on African art and foreign cultures as well as personal synthesis."




Sponsored by Inspire, a marketing and branding company, the auction, according to Amodu, is aimed to broaden the scope of art appreciation, using the virtual windows.

Among the lots for the online auction are: The Perdect Couple,
(2004, oil on canvas, 36 x 48 inches (92 x 122cm), estimated at $1,200 -- $4,000 USD; Till The End Of Time, (2007, acrylic on canvas, 24 x 36 inches (61 x 92c),  $700. -- $2,500. USD; Eternal Sun of Wealth, (2007, acrylic on canvas, 36 x 24 inches (92 x 61cm), $700. -- $2,500. USD; and Gone Twosome, (2008, acrylic on canvas, 24 x 36 inches), $700. -- $2,500. USD.

Amodu explained the styles, technique and other contents in creation of the works.
 Excerpts from Amodu's Artist Statement: "I employed my artwork to visually document the past and the present, thereby creating a link between the historical, modern and contemporary times. I want my audience to feel the unique African aura robed in a global fabric because Art crosses all boundaries. Originality is one of my creative goals. My peculiar aesthetic qualities will announce my works to the world as remarkable works of art."



Rasheed Adedamola Amodu was born in 1966 at Surulere, Lagos. His parents are from Oyo State, Nigeria. His primary and secondary school education was done in Lagos before getting a Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.) in Fine Arts, specializing in painting, from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife, in 1991. He bagged a Master of Arts degree (M.A.), specializing in art history- African Studies, in 2001 at University of Ibadan, lbadan, and a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in African Art Studies from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- lfe, in 2015. Amodu is presently a Ph.D Postgraduate student at his alma mater: OAU, Ile- Ife. He was given a Distinguished Stewardship Award by the Society of Nigerian Artists, Lagos State Chapter in 2015. Hitherto, Amodu was a 1981 to 1985 trained Artists before moving on to the university. He has been practicing as an artist since 1985 before going for further studies as well as being involved in other art related engagements till date.



Amodu has five solo exhibitions and one two-man show to his name. He has also participated in many group and joint exhibitions. Rasheed has contributed essays to some books, journals and exhibition catalogues. He has also written articles on art published in newspapers. Amodu has been documented in several publications. His works of art has been collected in Nigeria and other countries such as USA, England, Netherland and Greece to mention a few. Rasheed has executed many commissions in painting, sculpture, graphics, art management and other creative fronts. His creative inspiration comes from diverse sources such as life and death, joy and sadness, simplicity and complexity, natural and mysterious essence of life as well as Godliness.




He worked as a draughtsmanship trainee, graphic artist, art teacher, art and culture manager, and curator between 1984 and 2010. Amodu is a member of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), International Association of Art Critics (AICA), Ona group of Artists (ONA), and Best of lfe group of Artists. His hobbies are reading, writing, watching sports, films, music, nature watch and other forms of art.
