Muholi's 'immoral' images returns home

Remember South Africa’s controversial artist Zanele Muholi’s lesbian images shown at Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA), Lagos?
A quick reminder: the photography works were shown at a CCA’s joint art exhibition Like A Virgin, held in 2009 and featured works of a Nigerian artist, Lucy Azubuike.
The latest news about Muholi and her controversial works is that she is heading back to South Africa with Faces and Phases, showing at Goethe Institute in Johannesburg on November 27.
When Muholi showed the works in South Africa few years ago, among those who did not agree the works should pass for art was the then Minister of Arts and Culture, Lulu Xingwana. Currently the country’s Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Xingwana had described Muholi’s images as immoral.
Muholi’s Faces and Phases, it was reported has been ‘a hit internationally in such countries as Switzerland, Italy and Brazil.’
