Hirst, Emin, other artists’ signature sell wine bottle for record sale


A huge bottle of wine adorned with Damien Hirst sketching shark, Antony Gormley drawing an outline of a male figure, Tracey Emin adding a self-portrait and Edmund de Waal writing a list of his works on has been sold at Christie’s for £12,500.

Ahead of the auction, the bottle, tagged Lot 154  according to Christie’s was estimated to reach between £10,000 and £15,000.
The wine bottle, sold few days ago was described as Kentish produce from Kent-based Chapel Down winery. It was said to be “the equivalent of ten magnums of champagne. At 15 litres, it has been claimed that it’s the largest ever bottle of English sparkling wine, pouring around 120 glasses. It weighs 26kg and contains “about 60 million bubbles.”
Provenance says the huge bottle of wine was created to celebrate the millionth visitor to Margate’s Turner Contemporary. The millionth person visited the gallery in August 2013.
