Ghanaian poet, Awoonor, killed in Kenya Mall attack

Ghanaian poet and diplomat, Prof Kofi Awoonor has been identified among the initial 39 victims of terror killed during the violence attack on Westgate Mall, Nairobi, Kenya. He died yesterday  aged 78, after sustaining injuries in the attack.

The Ghanaian government confirmed Awoonor’s death early Sunday morning. Also attack is the deceased’s son who was shot in the shoulder, but treated and discharged from hospital late on Saturday. Over 50 people have been reportedly killed in the attack.
President John Mahama who was on his way to New York, USA, has described as a sad twist of fate, Awoonor's presence at the Nairobi Mall.

In a handwritten tribute while transiting in London, enroute to New York, President Mahama said: "I am shocked to hear the death of Prof Kofi Awoonor in Nairobi Mall terrorist attack. Such a sad twist of fate to place Prof at the wrong place at the wrong time".
